on the roads. a stretch of road connecting fremont and castro valley is shut down this morning... because a 700- pound boulder could come crashing down at any moment. it's happening on palomares road... near niles canyon in alameda county. kron 4's lydia pantazes shows us just how dangerous a situation this has become. this road here behind me is a popular shortcut for people trying to get from alameda county to contra costa county. but tonight it's closed... and will stay that way at least through friday afternoon."you know it's closed, i live off this road."drivers trying to get home.drivers on palomares road in alameda county forced to turn around..."me having to go around right now is going to be easily 40 minutes, 45 minutes to an hour."this is just one of the reasons for the detour.a large boulder held in place by a tree. "there's boulders that are going to come down and that's why we shut it."you can see several other rocks and boulders held in place by other trees and brush."a few of the boulders that are in danger of falling we estimate to be about 700 pounds and if you can imagine a 700 pound object falling from about 40-feet on top of a car or bicyclist that's pretty dangerous."you can see at least a dozen large dents in the ground in fact these large dents in the ground where rocks have already fallen.
4:06 am
"this whole face right here is likely going to slip."john medlock, the deputy director for maintenance and operations for alameda county says anything from the rain to wind can trigger the rocks to fall. "the reason why we closed it." but despite the closure, people still tried to get through."yeah, sometimes people think a road closed sign or warning applies to everyone but them."but officials with alameda county say turning around... could mean the difference between life and death."i understand they have to take every precaution seriously."alameda county officials are hoping to open at least one lane of the road by tomorrow afternoon. reporting in alameda county, lydia pantazes kron4 news.
4:07 am
and in the south bay... northbound lanes on highway-17 in the santa cruz mountains are still closed this morning. crews are working to clear the mudslide that has blocked the northbound lanes off and on for more than a month. rain and dangerous conditions have delayed that work over the past few weeks. caltrans says there is now a geologist on site to assess when it is too dangerous to work...and when crews can resume. there is still no estimate to when all lanes will be open. and there are concerns that highway 37 in novato could flood again today as more rain hits. crews have been trying to make repairs to the road all week. highway 37- has been prone to flooding this winter... making it a nightmare for commuters in the area.
4:08 am
yesterday crews worked on building a barrier to keep water off of the road way. caltrans has not given an estimate to when that will re-open. people who live near the or-o-ville dam are worried they may have to evacuate again as more rain hits. but state water officials say they are confident a damaged spillway and eroded hillside can withstand the approaching storms. crews identified the three areas where erosion was causing a probelm. they say one area has been fully repaired, while the other parts are 25 percent and 69 percent fixed. earleir this week nearly 200-thousand people were allowed to return home after emergency evacuations were ordered downstream. here in the bay area... the arrival of wet weather means the anderson reservoir near morgan hill could reach capacity this weekend. for the first time in a decade... water is expected to start flowing over the reservoirs spillway. and as kron 4's charles clifford explains...that could lead to
4:09 am
flooding downstream. standupright now i'm standing at the bottom of anderson dam here in santa clara county and behind me is the main outlet for the anderson reservoir and right now the santa clara valley water district has it wide open sending 416 cubic feet of water per second into coyote creek.natsthe district is hoping to drain as much water as possible out of the reservoir before the next big round of storms arrives. as of thursday afternoon, the lake is sitting at about 99.2 percent of full capacity and climbing. the district believes that with the incoming moisture the reservoir will probably hit 100 percent this weekend.when that happens, water will start flowing over anderson's one and only spill way. the added flow into coyote creek will most likely result in flooding. the water district expects low lying areas downstream to see high water. whether flood waters reach any of the thousands of homes and businesses below the dam will depend on how big the incoming
4:10 am
storms are. jeremy kastle and his wife live just below the dam. sotyeah, i worry about it a little bit. that would be a total bummer for the people of morgan hill. we need water but not like that.in addition to possible flooding there is another danger here.sota few years ago, anderson damn was deemed seismically unsafe and the reservoir for safety reasons is suppsed to be kept at a maximum of 68 percent of capacity. right now it's at 99 percent.in the unlikely event that a big earthquake were to hit the area while the reservoir is full, damage to the dam could send a wall of water flooding downstream. kastle says that he and his neighbors are aware of the danger, but admit there's not much they can do about it. sot there's a little buzz going around but people aren't to afraid i guess.standupthe water district says it could take between 4 and 9 weeks to lower the water level back to where it should be. that will also depend on how strong the storms are in the coming days and weeks. in santa clara county, charles clifford kron 4 news. and we will continue to
